White Sox Acquire Casper Wells

Sep 17, 2014 5:27 PM

The Chicago White Sox have acquired Casper Wells from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for cash.

The outfielder has bounced around quite a bit this year.

After being designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners at the end of Spring Training, he was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Following a short stint with Toronto during which he did not appear in a game, he was designated once again, this time being traded to the A's.

Astros Have No Plans To Trade Bud Norris

Jul 23, 2014 11:08 AM

There have been persistent rumors that the Houston Astros will trade Bud Norris at midseason, but general manager Jeff Luhnow is adamant that there are no plans to do so.

"Bud's a critical part of our team," Luhnow said. "He's always going to be rumored to be moved, and that's unfortunate for him and unfortunate for us, but here's nothing active happening right now. There hasn't been in a long time and we're not planning on moving Bud. He's an important part of our team right now."

Norris is 2-2 with a 4.74 ERA heading into his fifth start of the season Tuesday against the Mariners.

Angels Nearly Acquired Miguel Cabrera In 2007

Sep 25, 2014 11:16 AM

Miguel Cabrera thought at one point early in his career that he would be traded to the Los Angeles Angels.

Cabrera, 24, had just wrapped up his fourth full season with the Florida Marlins, hitting .320 with 34 homers and 119 RBIs.

He was getting considerable attention on the open market. The Marlins, who had paid him $7.4 million in his first year of arbitration, were seeking the best package available before he became eligible for free agency.

The Angels were considered front-runners by many. Cabrera often worked out with Mike Napoli at the time.

"Napoli was telling [Raul] Ibanez the Angels were going to be better [in 2008] with me," Cabrera said. "A week later, I was going to Detroit."

Cabrera emerged as a Triple Crown winner with the Tigers.

"Starters Ervin Santana and Joe Saunders were in the Cabrera conversations," writes Lyle Spencer.

"Pitcher Nick Adenhart and shortstop Brandon Wood were high-end prospects coveted everywhere. Howie Kendrick was a rising star at second base. Kendrys Morales, two years removed from breaking out as a slugging first baseman, center fielder and leadoff man Reggie Willits and catcher Jeff Mathis could have been part of a package."

Cardinals, Rangers Haven't Discussed Profar, Taveras Deal

Oct 31, 2014 6:12 AM

The Texas Rangers have a hole in the outfield and the St. Louis Cardinals one in the infield, but the two clubs haven't discussed swapping their top prospects.

Oscar Taveras is one of the game's best outfield prospects, while Jurickson Profar is one of the best shortstop prospects.

"It makes all sorts of sense and there is no way to do it," said an official with an American League team who has scouted both players. "The Cardinals need a shortstop. The Rangers need an outfielder. The answer is there for both for years to come. You just can't do it. You can't be the guy who is wrong if one works out and becomes a star as expected and the other doesn't.

"Then you're the new Brock-for-Broglio guy."

Red Sox Never Went After Ted Lilly

Oct 25, 2014 10:47 AM

The Boston Red Sox never pursued Ted Lilly when he was made available by the Los Angeles Dodgers because it would have been too difficult to add him to the 25-man roster.

Boston has been looking for a veteran starter they can keep at Triple A in reserve, but haven't found the right guy.
